- Above MA — green, left: price is sitting above the moving average (the MA acting as support)
- Below MA — red, right: price is below it (the MA acting as overhead resistance)
▲ / ▼), and each row shows the ticker, company, a bar scaled to the headline number, the distance to the MA (e.g. +1.8%), a z-score of the day’s move, and a badge naming the level (near 200D MA · $312.40).
The controls
Four controls in the Above MA header drive both panels together:The moving averages
The five MAs are the levels desks actually trade around:- 50D — the intermediate-trend line; the fast leg of golden/death crosses.
- 150D — the Minervini trend-template line (50 > 150 > 200 = healthy uptrend).
- 200D — the bull/bear divider, the most-watched level on the board.
- 30W — Stan Weinstein’s stage-analysis line (≈ 150 days, on weekly closes).
- 200W — the long-term secular floor (≈ 4 years), computed on weekly closes.
The three modes
This is where the MA card differs from highs/lows — proximity and distance are two ends of one ruler, so the mode picks which end you care about:- Near — names trading within 3% of the MA, sorted closest-to-the-line first. The “testing the level” view: who’s coiling on support, who’s pressing into resistance.
- Cross — names that crossed the MA today. In the Above panel that’s a reclaim (closed back above); in Below, a loss (closed under). The discrete-event view — fresh signals, not standing conditions.
- Extended — names most stretched from the MA, no cap, ranked by distance. Above = most overbought versus trend; Below = most oversold. The mean-reversion watch.
Close vs intraday
Basis changes what price is compared to the line:- Close — today’s close versus the MA. Clean and confirmed.
- Intraday — uses the day’s high/low. In Near it catches names that tagged the MA intraday (a wick to the line counts), in Cross it catches an intraday poke through even if the close didn’t confirm, and in Extended it measures the furthest the day reached from the line.
The numbers in each row
- Distance (headline) — the percent the price sits above or below the MA. Green above, red below.
- z-score (the
σnext to it) — how unusual today’s move is versus that name’s own past year of daily moves, exactly as on the highs/lows card. - Badge — names the relationship and the live level, e.g.
near 50D MA · $48.10,reclaimed 200D · $312.40,above 200W MA · $19.80. - Chart icon — opens the stock pop-out with the panel’s selected MA already drawn: scanning against the 200D and the chart opens with an SMA 200 overlay on, ready to eyeball the test. Works for any MA option, and it’s one-shot — it doesn’t overwrite the moving averages you’ve saved on the chart. The exception is 200W, which exceeds the chart’s MA cap, so it opens plain.
How most people use it
- Support test — MA = 200D, Mode = Near: which leaders are pulling back into their 200-day, the classic buy-the-dip zone?
- Fresh reclaim — Mode = Cross, watch the Above panel: who just won back their 200D today?
- Stretched tape — Mode = Extended: names far above their MA (take-profit / fade candidates) or far below (oversold bounce candidates).
In Extended mode the header counts show every name above / below the line (since each one is some distance from it) — read that as a breadth gauge. Near and Cross counts are just the names that qualify.
