# New highs & lows

> Which single names are printing fresh highs or lows across an index universe.

Below the **Top Gainers / Top Losers** panels on the [Indices](/indices/overview) page sits the **New Highs / New Lows** section — a fast read on which individual stocks are breaking out to (or breaking down from) extremes across a whole index at once.

Two panels, side by side:

* **New Highs** — green, left
* **New Lows** — red, right

Each header carries a running count (`▲ 23 highs`, `▼ 5 lows`) — a quick breadth read that complements the **Market Breadth** panel up top. Each row shows the ticker, company, a bar scaled to its move on the day, a badge like `new 52W high · +1.4%`, and — to the right of the day's move — a **z-score** (e.g. `+2.1σ`): how unusual today's move is versus that name's own past year of daily moves. The bigger the σ, the more the move stands out from its normal range.

## The controls

Four controls live in the New Highs header and drive both panels together:

| Control      | Options                                                                                            | What it does                                                           |
| ------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Universe** | Nasdaq 100 (default), S\&P 500, S\&P 100, Dow Jones, Russell 1000, Russell 2000, ETFs, All Markets | Which set of stocks to scan                                            |
| **Window**   | 1M · 3M · 6M · YTD · **52W** (default)                                                             | The lookback that defines the high/low                                 |
| **Basis** | **Close** (default) · Intraday | Whether the extreme is measured on closing prices or intraday high/low |
| **Mode** | **New** (default) · Near | Fresh prints today, or names coiling within 1% of the extreme |

## What "qualifies"

The **Window** sets the lookback and the qualifier is always "did it print that extreme on the latest bar." So **52W** is the classic 52-week-high list; switch to **3M** and you get names making a fresh 3-month high today.

**Basis** decides what value is tested:

* **Close** — today's close vs the prior closes in the window. Cleaner and less noisy; matches how Market Breadth computes.
* **Intraday** — today's high vs the prior window's highs (and today's low vs prior lows) — the traditional "tagged a new 52W high" definition.

**Mode** decides how close counts:

* **New** — the stock actually made the extreme on the latest bar. Sorted by the biggest move on the day.
* **Near** — the stock is trading **within 1% of its window extreme** (coiling). A superset of New, sorted by the day's move just like the New list, with each badge (`near 52W high · -0.4%`) showing how far that name sits from the extreme.

## How most people use it

* **Breakout scan** — Universe = Russell 2000, Window = 52W, Mode = New: where is small-cap leadership printing fresh highs?
* **Coiling watch** — flip Mode to **Near** to catch names pressing against a high *before* they break, not after.
* **Breadth gut-check** — the `▲ highs / ▼ lows` counts at a glance: a tape making new index highs while new-high *breadth* thins out is worth a second look.

<Note>
  The lists cap at the most relevant \~25 names per side and scroll if there are more — common in the 3M and All Markets views, where dozens of names can qualify at once.
</Note>

## Bars ⇄ chart view

The header toggle (same as Top Gainers/Losers) flips the lists into **line charts** — the top 10 highs and top 10 lows as %-rebased lines over your selected window, with a clickable legend (click a ticker to hide/show its line), crosshair readout, and scroll-zoom. Handy for seeing whether the new-high list is one theme moving together or a broad advance.
