# Day type

> What the label at the top of every Daily Recap means.

Every trading day gets one label, derived from the shape of the [quant score](/concepts/quant-score) arc through the session. You'll see it at the top of every [Daily Recap](/macro/daily-recap).

## The labels

| Label | What happened | Color |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------- |
| **Trending Up** | Score climbed steadily from open to close, no significant pullback | Green |
| **Trending Down** | Score fell steadily from open to close, no significant bounce | Red |
| **Reversal (Recovery)** | Opened positive, sold off mid-day, recovered into the close | Blue |
| **Reversal (Failed)** | Opened negative, rallied mid-day, faded into the close | Orange |
| **Range-Bound** | Score oscillated; no decisive move in either direction | Gray |
| **Breakout** | Closed well beyond the day's typical range — a meaningful new level | Magenta |
| **Mixed** | None of the above patterns fit cleanly | Amber |

## Why the label matters

* **Trending days** tend to have **follow-through** the next session — direction persists.
* **Range days** are mean-reverting environments — fading extremes pays.
* **Reversal days** are where regime shifts often start — pay attention to what *caused* the reversal.
* **Breakouts** are decisive — they're a tell that the market accepted a new level.

The label is a description, not a prediction. Use it as context for the rest of the recap, not as a standalone signal.
